Definition

A thread template is a reusable outline that assigns a purpose to each part of a thread. It can specify an opening problem, supporting points, an example, and a final action. The template supplies structure while the author provides the actual information and evidence.

A useful template describes what each entry needs to accomplish rather than prescribing interchangeable filler. For instance, “show the result with a measured example” gives stronger guidance than “add an impressive statistic.” Not every topic needs the same number of entries, and some explanations need caveats before a conclusion.

Adapt the outline to the material instead of forcing the material into every slot. Remove sections that repeat earlier points and add context where a reader would otherwise be lost. A template can make drafting more consistent, but it does not verify facts or ensure the finished thread delivers on its opening promise.

Example

A tutorial template uses an opening problem, three steps, a worked example, and a final recap.

How to apply it

Save a 6-slot outline: problem, promise, 3 proofs, action. For each new draft, write the proofs first and delete any slot you cannot fill with a real example. If you only have 2 proofs, ship a 5-post thread. Do not invent a third statistic to satisfy the template. Keep the template in a doc with a 15-minute timebox per slot when you batch on Mondays.

When you schedule, check that post 1 still matches the number of remaining slots. If you cut a section, update "3 mistakes" to "2 mistakes" in the opener. On Threads, you can combine two short slots into one 500-character reply. On a Facebook Page, map slot 1 to the parent post and the rest to comments. A template is a checklist, not a requirement to hit 8 posts.

Common mistakes

  • Inventing a third statistic so every slot in the outline is filled.
  • Leaving the opener promising 5 steps after you deleted two of them in editing.
  • Reusing the same filler sentences across topics instead of writing new proofs.
