Reply chain
A reply chain is a sequence of posts connected by replies, with each reply attached to an earlier post.

Definition
A reply chain is a sequence of posts connected by replies, with each reply attached to an earlier post. When an author repeatedly replies to their own latest entry, the chain can carry an ordered explanation. When other people participate, the conversation can branch into several separate paths.
The connection is structural, not just visual. Publishing several independent posts with matching numbers does not automatically make them replies to one another. A publishing system needs the identifier of the intended parent post to attach each new entry correctly.
Readers may encounter a reply without first seeing its parent. Include enough context to identify the subject, and avoid references that become confusing outside the full sequence. After publishing, check that each entry follows the intended parent and that any final resource or question is accessible from the opening post. Missing links can split an otherwise coherent explanation.
Example
A teacher publishes a Threads introduction, replies with a worked example, and replies to that example with a practice question.
How to apply it
Always attach reply 2 to post 1, then each later reply to the latest post ID, not back to the opener. After you schedule an X or Threads thread, open the live conversation within 5 minutes and confirm the indent. If post 4 landed as a standalone update, delete it and republish it as a reply to post 3. Number the entries 2/n in the text as a backup, but do not treat numbers as a substitute for the reply link.
Leave a 20-minute buffer between finishing the draft and the scheduled time so you can fix a broken parent. When you resume after a failed send, start from the first missing index instead of posting the whole sequence again. On Threads, tap into the opener as a reader and walk the chain once before you walk away.
Common mistakes
- Publishing numbered posts as separate updates that are not replies to each other.
- Retrying the whole sequence after one failure and creating duplicate openers.
- Referring to 'the last post' without enough context for someone who landed mid-chain.
