Follower growth

Follower growth is the change in an account’s follower count over a defined period.

A rising glowing line chart of light lifts through a field of avatar circles.

Definition

Follower growth is the change in an account’s follower count over a defined period. Net growth subtracts the starting count from the ending count, reflecting both gains and losses. Gross new followers, when available, describes additions without subtracting people who left.

A growth percentage divides net change by the starting follower count and multiplies by one hundred. That calculation is undefined when the starting count is zero, so report the raw change instead. Small starting audiences can produce large percentages from a modest number of new followers.

Use follower growth alongside evidence about who the audience is and how it responds. A larger count does not guarantee more readers for every thread or more relevant conversations. Account cleanup, campaigns, and unrelated exposure can also affect the total. When evaluating content, avoid assigning all growth during a period to one post unless the measurement provides that attribution.

Example

An account starts the month with 900 followers and ends with 945, a net increase of 45 followers.

How to apply it

Record starting followers on day 1 of the month and net change on day 30. Also note unfollows if the dashboard shows them. A jump of 40 after one thread is interesting only if the new followers match the topic. Check 10 new bios before you repeat that hook. Percentage growth from 80 to 96 looks huge and is still 16 people.

Do not assign all monthly growth to the thread with the most impressions. Campaigns, cleanup, and unrelated mentions move the total. After a burst, wait 14 days and see whether those accounts still reply. On Threads and a Facebook Page, keep separate monthly rows. Adding the three nets double-counts people who followed you in more than one place.

Common mistakes

  • Reporting a large percentage gain from a tiny starting count as if it were scale.
  • Assigning a full month of net follows to whichever thread had the most impressions.
  • Adding follower totals across X, Threads, and Facebook as if they were unique people.
