Definition

Click-through is the action of following a link from content to its destination. It describes movement from the social post toward a resource, page, or other linked location. A click-through is different from liking the post or expanding it to read more text.

Click-through rate expresses counted link clicks as a percentage of a stated exposure measure, often impressions. The numerator must specifically identify link clicks: a dashboard’s broader click count might include profile opens, media interactions, or other actions. Name the denominator when comparing percentages.

A recorded click also differs from a confirmed destination visit or completed action. Loading failures, repeated clicks, and measurement settings can create differences between platform reports and website analytics. Use consistent campaign labels when appropriate and compare the relevant stages separately. Clear link text should explain what readers will find, allowing them to choose the destination because it is useful to them.

Example

A reader opens the worksheet link in a thread’s closing post; that action is a click-through to the worksheet.

How to apply it

Put one tracked link in the final post, with a label that names the file, such as "Open the 1-page checklist." Add a UTM that includes the slug and the date. On X, click it from a phone 10 minutes after send. If the destination requires a login, you will over-count curiosity and under-count completed views. Compare platform link clicks with the landing page's sessions the next morning.

Do not treat a dashboard's generic "clicks" as link clicks if it also counts media and profile taps. When you A/B an opener link versus a final-reply link, keep the rest of the thread identical and wait 72 hours. Report both click-throughs and destination signups. A higher click count on a broken page is not a win.

Common mistakes

  • Treating every dashboard click, including profile taps, as a visit to the resource.
  • Sending people to a login wall and then blaming the thread for low completed views.
  • Comparing click-through rates without naming the exposure denominator you used.
